Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) frequently headlines newspapers and newscasts across America. Veterans fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan return to a life they left but inside they are tormented with flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, anger, and depression. Many people suffer from PTSD after experiencing traumatic events in his or her life. Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI-2) is chosen for the basis of this assignment to evaluate someone who exhibits symptoms of PTSD. Sometimes the symptoms of PTSD are exaggerated or faked. The basic characteristics and the purpose of this tool will be discussed as well as how the tool is used. Only a trained professional should administer, score, or interpret the test. The MMPI-2 is only one piece of the puzzle of di agnosis for PTSD or other findings. A professional assessment should include a detailed history background, evaluating medical records, a through psychological assessment as well as looking at the person’s educational background. A thorough evaluation, looking at all aspects of the person’s life will help make a true diagnosis (Advameg, Inc., 2011). The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR) requires ruling out malingering before diagnosis of PTSD is rendered. MMPI-2 is frequently used and contains â€Å"fake-bad† validity scales, which can be used to detect the â€Å"fake-bad† symptoms from someone who claims they have PTSD. Faking the symptoms is common and can be difficult for a therapist to discover. Sometimes, a client will bond with a therapist, and because the bond includes trust, the therapist is reluctant to test the client or even question the client. Information about PTSD is readily available and easy to obtain, so clients are in essence coached into the necessary symptoms.
